Purpose: This study aimed to compare the differences of family function, sociality, ego-resiliency and school adjustment between students from formally broken families and students from general families and find out the factors' influences on the school lives of students from formally broken families. Methods: 8 middle schools (2 classes of first grade, 2 classes of second grade)were chosen from each of D city’s 8 districts. A survey was given to 1034 students who completed the family functioning scale, the sociality scale, the ego-resilience scale and the school related adaptation scale. Final subjects included 1010 students (147 students from formally broken families, 863 students from normal families). The data was analyzed usingχ2-test, t-test, ANOVA, correlation, and hierarchical regression with the SPSS/PC 21.0 statistic program. Results: The students from normal families scored higher than students from formally broken families in terms of the family function, sociality, ego resiliency and school adaptation. Regarding the school adjustment difference according to the general characteristics, students from formally broken families adapt to their school lives better when they are satisfied with their school lives, get high grades, and feel healthy. A positive correlation was shown in family function, sociality, ego resiliency and school adjustment for students from formally broken families. Conclusion: Family's formally deficiency was a great influence on adolescents. To help students from formally broken families to adapt to school life, it is necessary to develop and apply programs for improving the students' sociality and ego resiliency that influence school adjustment.
