Korean urban housing that was constructed during the country’s economic development period has recently emerged one of the promising resources for urban regeneration with its potential for being remodeled following usage conversion. Korean urban housing developed its uniqueness in terms of typology during the rapid industrialization and urbanization that the country went through. The urban housing from ‘70s and ‘80s, in particular, reflects social and cultural changes in Korea and represents the status of the construction industry at the specific time in history. Buildings from these times are recognized and appreciated as cultural assets that can be repurposed to facilitate the movement of urban revitalization. Structure, spatial composition, type of elevations and materials are significant elements that determine the type of urban housing in typology. This study analyzed effective remodeling cases in Seoul to present how the elements of urban housing from ‘70s and ‘80s were modified to meet new functional needs and how these cases influence the project results. The existing structure of masonry was mostly reinforced with steel to obtain large space. In some cases, the existing wooden roof structure got exposed to highlight the character of the space. In terms of spatial composition, small residential rooms were combined to one large space for new use, and the availability of stairs influenced circulation planning and program arrangement. In elevation, existing windows on facade were adjusted to main entrance, balcony were modified to reroute the circulation or to extend space. The purpose of this study is to analyze various remodeling cases of urban housing buildings in Seoul and to identify the modifications that work best for each type of building for future remodeling projects.
