In the aspect of the ‘private archive’ in which the individual is acting as a subject of the record, it is now widely used as an index that implies the narrative of contemporaneity beyond just the role of materials collected from the past, utilized as a tool of meaning production that might potentially come up with networks of very trivial objects at the same time. This article is the result of exploring the potential of archives as a tool of Graphic Design.
The first part of the work, <Atypical Elements>, is an archive organized in a dictionary format utilizing my records on image-based platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest. To make the contents flexible and keep being able to free myself from the existing ideas that are predominant in my consciousness, I cross-matched each caption of the collected image and a conceptual heading together in the dictionary.
In the following work <Reconstruction of Memories>, I rearranged photos and diaries taken while traveling by injecting the concept of hyperlinks since I believed that hyperlinks could play a key role in setting non-linear storytelling based on memories that have been in complex connections between individual materials. For the last one, <The Aesthetics of Collection>, I collected various thoughts of contemporary artists under the three keywords, inspiration, idea, and attitude. I tried to capture a flow of the current art movement by collecting the artist’s interviews and extracting remarks that fit the above keywords.
Through this study, it was worthwhile that I could be able to explore the nature of Archives and their value for graphic design production as a tool.
