Because social relationships formed in the neighborhood during preschool childhood continue to influence children’s development at later stages, basic research was conducted to understand the characteristics of children’s neighborhood social relationships. To explore the relationship between children’s social relationships and the opportunities, places, and characteristics of the neighborhood environment, a survey was conducted on 501 preschool children living in Seoul. Preschoolers were found to have more relationships with their peers than with their adult neighbors, and some preschoolers had no social relationships at all. The most common reason for getting to know adult neighbors was to meet them frequently, and for peers, the most common reason was to use the same facilities or programs. The places where preschool children meet adult neighbors are mainly around the house, next door, at home, and parks, and with peers are around the house, playground, friends’ houses, daycare centers, and kindergartens. The higher the level of satisfaction with the neighborhood pedestrian environment and crime safety, the higher the degree of social relationships. Therefore, in order to form social relationships among preschool children in the neighborhood, efforts are needed to improve the pedestrian environment and crime safety around homes, playgrounds, parks, kindergartens, and daycare centers.
