People prone to understand the method of quoting scripture of Shuwen Jiezi in explaining characters is to present the examples of the letters. Taking a closer look at the cited 173 letters from Shangshu, however, the author Xushen has often cited the sentences in a different edition that are not identical to the originals, or the sentences in the originals with dissimilar comprehensions to that of other commentators. In addition, Shangshu, was cited to explain the variant form of a Chinese character, phonetic loan characters, the pronunciation of letters, and in some cases, to explain the object to which the letter refers. Therefore, the intention of the scriptural citation of Shuwen Jiezi should not be limited to simply showing examples. It is reasonable to believe that Xushen cited Shangshu to make his academic position clear on the phrases and letters in the dispute between the modern script version and the old script version.
