This study aims to investigate the emotions that people experience when they participate in impolite discourse from a cross-cultural perspective. Based on the assumption that ‘face’ and ‘sociality rights’ are closely connected to particular emotions (Culpeper et al., 2014), this study argues that the role of cognition in the mediation of emotion is crucial when it comes to explain impoliteness and cultural variation as well. The data consisted of 100 reports of impoliteness events generated by undergraduates in Korea and the US. Emotion labels were extracted from the data and classified into emotion groups. The data analysis shows that though Korean and English data suggest less cultural variation at higher level of emotion categories, there is more variation at lower level of categories.
