This study was conducted to develop and validate a parental burnout scale by deriving the components of parental burnout by targeting the parents of young children. A survey of 519 parents of young children was conducted, using a questionnaire that was developed through a literature review, in-depth interviews with the parents of young children, and a content-validity review by a panel of experts. The results of this study showed that first, parental burnout for the parents of young children could be classified into three components: emotional exhaustion, somatization, and the loss of role identity. Second, upon examining the correlation between this and the parenting anxiety scale to verify the concurrent validity of the parental burnout scale developed in this study, emotional exhaustion and the somatization of parental burnout were positively correlated with protection anxiety, relational anxiety, and ability anxiety. The loss of role identity was positively correlated with relationship anxiety and ability anxiety. However, no significant correlation with protection anxiety was seen. This study is meaningful in that compared to Parental Burnout Inventory which was an adaptation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory for parental work, or Parental Burnout Assessment, which took a parental role-oriented approach, the scale developed in this study can more accurately measure parental burnout in consideration of object and cultural differences.
