Naemyounbu system is a women’s organization that plays a role in assisting the queen’s internal affairs with the queen at the center. In the early Joseon Dynasty, the internal register system was not completed, and traces of the Goryeo system remained.
In the period before King Sejong, the system of Goryeo was used and the system of the Yeo-gwan was repeatedly installed and abolished. These systems were used until King Sejong’s reign, but in the 10th year of King Sejong’s reign, Sejong newly established a palace organization, Naemyounbu system. It consisted of Naegwan with up to four grades and Gunggwan with from five to seven grades.
Gradually, it was necessary to introduce the concubines and lady-inwaitings of the former kings into a system, and King Sejo integrated them all at once and eliminated the quota. Under the “Gyeongguk Daejeon” system, it was expanded to 18 grades of the Jeong and Jong. The difference is that King Sejong’s reign was accurately divided into a dual system of the Naegwan and Gunggwan, while it was unified as the Naemyounbu system. It is believed that this was intended to create a hierarchy by integrating the fact that the palace had a character as a bureaucrat, but at the same time, even those in the position of the actual concubine maintained the position of the Gunggwan into a system called Naemyounbu. These changes in the system are confirmed through the women’s funeral dress system that appears in the country.
