Numerous studies have been conducted on Japanese language education in accordance with the national curriculum. Given that the curriculum reflects the circumstances of the time, a multifaceted analysis is necessary. This paper examines the aspects of Japanese language education during the Third National Curriculum period (1974~1981) in high schools. It all began in 1972 when President Park Chung-hee advocated for “education with nationality” and directed that Japanese be designated as a second foreign language in high schools. Subsequently, Japanese language education was first implemented in high schools in 1973. The partial revision of the Third National Curriculum in 1973 included Japanese in vocational high schools, and the full incorporation of Japanese into the curriculum occurred in 1974. This period marked the expansion phase of Japanese language education. While there have been numerous studies focused on analyzing the curriculum and textbooks during this time, research reflecting the social context remains insufficient. Therefore, this paper focuses on the Third National Curriculum period, which served as a turning point in the development of Japanese language education, in the context of the social situation under the Park Chung-hee regime. The content of Japanese language education during this period was examined by closely analyzing the curriculum and the contents of the “High School Japanese Reader (Volume 1).” Through this analysis, it was confirmed that the curriculum reflected the social circumstances of the time, and the textbooks used were directly influenced by the educational ideology and political stance toward Japan that the Park Chung-hee regime pursued. It is hoped that the discussions in this paper will offer insights into the future direction of Japanese language education.
