South Korea is rapidly transitioning into a super-aged society, leading to an increased demand for clothing that reflects the physical and psychological changes experienced by the elderly. This study explores the design guidelines for universal design activewear by conducting Focus Group Interviews (FGI) with “New Seniors”, aged 60-70. As a result of this study, six key principles of universal design that can enhance the usability and comfort of seniors were identified. The derived principles are ‘Low Physical Effort’, ‘Flexibility in Use’, ‘Equitable Use’, ‘Quality and Aesthetics’, ‘Safety’, and ‘Durability and Economic Consideration.’ The findings indicate that New Seniors prefer activewear that is easy to put on and take off, facilitates thermal regulation, features simple yet effective design, and is affordably priced. This study provides practical design guidelines for developing suitable activewear that can improve senior satisfaction. Future research, involving collaboration among experts from various fields such as fashion design, engineering, sociology, and psychology, could contribute to establishing more comprehensive and innovative universal design guidelines. Such efforts would be beneficial in responding to the growing demand for activewear and leisurewear among the increasing New Senior population.
