한방(동양의학)은 양방(서양의학)과 함께 우리 의학의 중요한 축으로 존재하고 있다. 과거의 의료적 시각을 넘어서 최신 의료의 하나로서 한방의 임상 과학화는 한방을 더욱 신뢰할 수 있는 의료로 자리매김하게 한다. 우리나라는 세계 어느 국가와 비교해도 우수한 의료환경을 갖추고 있다. 이에 더해 한방을 법과 제도 내에서 양방과 동일하게 취급함으로써 한방의 발전은 물론 한국 의료 전체의 발전을 도모할 수 있다. 이를 통해 환자의 선택권을 보장하고, 궁극적으로는 의료관광 대국으로서 한국의 위상을 높일 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 양방과 함께 한방의 발전은 차별화된 의료서비스, 전인적 접근, 문화적 경험 제공, 다양한 질병 치료 및 관리, 글로벌 네트워크 및 연구, 맞춤형 의료관광 패키지 개발 등을 통해 의료관광을 활성화할 수 있다. 이는 외국인 환자들에게 독특하고 효과적인 치료 경험을 제공하며, 한국의 의료관광 경쟁력을 높이는 데 기여할 것이다. 의료관광을 활성화하기 위한 방안으로 양방과 한방의 협진은 매우 효과적인 전략이다. 양방과 한방의 협진을 통한 의료관광 활성화는 두 의학의 장점을 결합하여 환자에게 포괄적이고 맞춤화된 의료서비스를 제공한다. 이는 환자의 치료 효과를 극대화하고, 문화적 경험을 제공하며, 효과적인 국제협력 및 홍보를 통해 많은 외국인 환자를 유치할 수 있는 전략이 될 것이다. 한방의 발전을 위해 몇 가지 구체적인 제언을 하고자 한다. 첫째, 한방 비급여 항목에 대한 실손의료보험 확대를 위한 노력이 필요하다. 둘째, 한방 임상연구의 중요성을 감안할 때, 한의약 선도기술 개발사업의 전체 예산을 확대하고 한방 임상연구 지원도 함께 늘려야 한다. 셋째, 한의계에서 주로 다루는 질환에 대한 표준화 작업을 꾸준히 진행함으로써 한의학이 타당한 근거를 바탕으로 발전·정착하도록 하고, 결과적으로 국민 보건 향상에 실질적으로 기여할 수 있도록 해야 한다. 넷째, 한방과 양방의 협진을 통한 의료관광 활성화를 통해 전 세계 의료관광의 허브 역할을 담당할 수 있을 것이다.

Oriental medicine, alongside Western medicine, exists as a crucial pillar of our healthcare system. Moving beyond traditional perspectives, the clinical scientific advancement of Oriental medicine positions it as a more reliable form of healthcare. South Korea possesses a superior medical environment compared to other countries. Additionally, by treating Oriental medicine on an equal footing with Western medicine within the legal and institutional framework, we can promote the development of Oriental medicine as well as the overall advancement of Korean healthcare. This approach ensures patient choice and ultimately enhances Korea’s status as a leading destination for medical tourism. The development of Oriental medicine in conjunction with Western medicine can invigorate medical tourism through differentiated medical services, holistic approaches, cultural experiences, diverse disease treatment and management, global networking and research, and the creation of customized medical tourism packages. This will provide foreign patients with unique and effective treatment experiences, thereby increasing the competitiveness of Korea’s medical tourism sector. As a strategy to promote medical tourism, the collaboration of Western and Oriental medicine is highly effective. This collaborative model aims to provide patients with comprehensive and personalized medical services by combining two medical approaches. The activation of medical tourism through the collaboration of Western and Oriental medicine merges the strengths of both fields, offering patients comprehensive and tailored medical services. This strategy maximizes treatment effectiveness, provides cultural experiences, and attracts numerous foreign patients through effective international cooperation and promotion. To advance Oriental medicine, I would like to propose several specific recommendations. First, efforts should be made to expand indemnity insurance coverage for non-reimbursed Oriental medicine treatments. Second, given the importance of clinical research in Oriental medicine, the overall budget for leading technological development projects in Oriental medicine should be increased, along with the support for clinical research in this field. Third, by consistently standardizing the diseases primarily treated within Oriental medicine, we should ensure that it develops and establishes itself based on sound evidence, thereby contributing to the improvement of public health. Fourth, we must position ourselves as a global medical tourism hub by promoting medical tourism through the collaboration of Western and Oriental medicine.
