1his study offers a critical review of studies on learners' concept and image of God. Defining the God concept as learners' cognitive understanding of God whereas the God image as their feelings and experiences, this study pursues to answer following four questions: 1) What dimensions or factors construct the God concept or image?; 2) Where does the God concept or image begins from?; 3) Whether and what psychological constructs are related to the God concept or image?; 4) How do we measure them? As for the dimensional issue, no studies deny multidimensional features of the God concept and the God image. However studies produce different factor structures, do not show data fit to the presumed factors, lack theoretical explanations of them. For better understanding of the dimensional issues of the God concept and image, it is necessary to integrate theology and religious psychology, thus, producing theoretical basis of the God concept and image. Regarding for the origin of the God concept and image, people's perceptions of their parents are suggested to be the most influential source, thus, supporting object-relations approach to the God image. Peoples' conceptualization of God and their God image are related to their self-image, personal adjustment, and the cognitive developmental stage. It is possible, however, that the relationship between the God image and self image might be spurious by a third factor, possibly object relations. Further studies should examine such possibility. Finally there has been many approaches to the measurement of the God concept and the God image: adjective ratings, concept mapping, scales, and interviews. Rizzuto's interviews are useful for exploring people's feeling and experiences of God. Lawrence's the God Image lnventory(GII) or the God Image Scales(GIS), designed on the basis of Rizzuto's distinction between the God concept and the God image, also seems useful if supported by factor structures. God image may reflect subjects' personal characteristics such as age, gender, and culture. No studies have examined cultural differences across countries in the development of the God image, thus, suggesting further research on such differences.
