Yangbanjon, a novel written in Korean, is kept in the library at Kyungpook University. This novel was first found and introduced to the scholars studying Korean literature in 2003. Another Yangbanjon, which has been well-known to us so far, was written in Chinese characters by Park, Jiwon in the 18th century. However, the newly found Yangbanjon is written in Korean and completely different from Park's in terms of its content.
The author of this novel is anonymous. However, it seems that the author was a conservative person with the viewpoints of the middle ages.
This novel seems to have been written in the late Chosun Dynasty. The author chose the model of writing out of the previous classic novels, and adopted domestic novels as the type of the conflict between a stepmother and her stepchildren, and Choonhyangjon as the model of the plot of the story.
This novel deals with the hero and heroine who are full of Confucian morality and other immoral characters devoted to jealousy, selfishness, greed, and sex, based on two dimensional points of view of the world; the lives of the former are accepted and admired, whereas those of the latter are criticized and blamed. The former half of the story describes the conflict between a stepmother and her stepchildren, and is characterized by the heroine's faithfulness and good personality. The latter half of the story emphasizes the hero's sacrificial good deeds. Thus, the conflict between the Confucian good and evil forms the basic characteristic plot of the novel. Therefore, the theme of this novel is the importance of Confucian morality.
This novel has a rare title of Yangbanjon. As is implied by the title, the author is much interested in Yangban and reveals his own view of Yangban. While Park, Jiwon's Yangbanjon, which is written in Chinese, criticizes Yangban, this novel acknowledges and admires Yangban. In his admiration of Yangban, the author especially places much emphasis on Yangban's morality.
This novel has little importance in terms of literary value and the spirit of the times. However, it has some sense in its historic points of view because it carries the same title and theme as Park Jiwon's Yangbanjon. From a broader perspective of novels, this novel is much contrasted with Park Jiwon's in that the two have an opposite view of Yangoon.
