The objective of this study is to investigate how Erickson's theory of identity is grafted onto the argumentative concept of tradition, Erickson's theory of identity is the perfection of self that is based on a mental state. The theory is a product of will which leads to integrate an individual's plural selves. General capacity of recognition coincides in poetry properties in terms of tradition formation At a moment of history identity equals tradition. The relationship suggests a consistent possibility to me.
Another research is to review the previous research according to the concept of identity. The result of an overall look at the past achievements so far is not satisfactory. Thus in poetry area I intensively investigate the probability which represents that identity equals tradition and its elements.
In the poetry of Sowol and Manhae, Korean identity as substitutive concept of tradition of Korean poetry is worthwhile to study. In their poetry traditional thematic elements are sentiment, sense of beauty, thoughts, and view of the world. I clarify how those elements are transformed in the poetry in terms of expression and form. As the result of the study I find out the traditional elements as the concept of identity in Korean poetry as the following.
First, in the aspect of sentiment, Sowol placed emphasis upon yearning and longing in his poems as Manhae did so feminism in his poems.
Secondly, in the sense of beauty two contemporaries had different experiences and value systems. Sowol used the themes of loss and pain. He is retrospective and his self-realization is based on experiences of feeling and flexibility. Manhae, in his poetry, put emphasis upon the experience of faith. His poetry is the lofty and sublime expression of the divine solace and comfort which he found in man. He pursued his struggle to gain future and divine sense of beauty.
Thirdly, Sowol was absorbed in enchantment and paradisiacal nature. On the other hand Manhae believed in Buddhism.
Fourthly, in the view of world, both Sowol and Manhae are in common with the use of oriental meditation and intuition.
Fifthly, in the aspect of expression and form, Sowol used ironical techniques and Manhae used paradoxical techniques.
