The purpose of this study is to overcome two views, which there are only individuality from the transcendent images or resistance against social reality of a colony in Sowol’s poetry, by reading Sowol’s poetry newly from a post-colonial point of view. Also, I intend to reveal the secret of emotional feelings in his poetry. A question about the possibility to read lyric poetry genre from a post-colonial point of view would be brought in. However, the answer of this question can be especially positive in the case of Sowol’s poetry. Sowol’s poetry seek to the narrative for a utopia of a community and life. This appears in the way of reproducing folk songs in his lyric poetry. It narrowly makes Sowol’s poetry placed between the boundary of the individuality and sociality, also it is seen as the way of expression in his poetry. Sowol’s narrative is the origin of the sympathy as the allegory of a periphery of provincial consciousness over the times. Despite his using of much transcendent images seen as be so personal, Sowol properly arranged folk song’s materials in the background of the poetry and make them the background scene of poetry. Consequently, this has made his modern narrative poetry successful and become successful background of his poetry up to today.
A periphery of provincial consciousness as a individual consciousness which causes a sense of loss, or alienation to Sowal can be divide into two parts. One is a political periphery of provincial consciousness, colonial alienation, and another is a psychological periphery of provincial consciousness, changed from first part. Especially, Kosung where Sowal lived in the end of his life gave him the double periphery of provincial consciousness. These are the periphery of provincial consciousness far from the center of the colonial government and as a local people distant from the central city of the colonized country. Because ‘han(恨)’, called central emotion in Sowol’s poetry, is the result of these political, psychological consciousness as a provincial, the tendencies to regard it as the individual and inborn traits of a race is just a point of view of colonial country. It is a downgraded evaluation of colonialism about a sense of loss of the no-rooted from the colony.
Therefore, Sowol’s internal emotion regarded as expression of individual emotion never end just individually, and accomplishes writing of the boundary layer, that is, express by putting one upon something else between individuality and sociality. Sowol’s individuality is just the individuality in the colonized period. He linguistically practiced the frictional resistance in his poetry, and it shows remarkably layered sociality and individuality. Sociality’s boundary layer on individuality is Sowol’s main poetic characteristic and linguistic resistance against the colonial times as well.
