Although picked up the pearl(1925-1926) by Yeom Sang-Seop is a very interesting fiction. This fiction takes the journalistic reports, letters of characters and testaments as its contents. This phenomena is especially problematic for the understanding of modern Korean fiction
This article focus the relationship of the fiction and the sex-scandal reports in the 1920s. Yeom Sang-Seop’s fiction illustrated the processes of modern Korean fictions in many aspects. Especiaally this fiction informs the modern Korean fiction is established through the complex interactions with the press. Sex-scandal reports was the new and interesting topics in 1920s and those are the primary communication matters of the people.
Although picked up the pearl accomodated these sex-scandal reports and its narrative process into fiction. The narrativity of the scandal reports can be easily transformed into fictions because of its intensive story-line and its didactic power. And in this process, the reader of the journalism also can be easily changed into the readers of the fiction.
The narrative voice and the stance of the narrator of this fiction is very similliar to that of the reports in many aspects. This means that Yeom Sang-Seop as a writer gained and novelized the stuff-matters and the power of the story-construction into his fictions. Especially in this fiction, the heros and heroines of many sex-scandal reoprts are transformed into the fictional characters, and in this process they represented the problems of modernity as sexuality and social contracts and legal justices.
So we can say that Although picked up the pearl is the work of threshold within which the modern Korean fiction took its way to modernity.
