Manchuria region is significant concerning Korean history development. This study is intended to investigate history textbooks contents regarding Manchuria region and find solutions for future improvement. History textbooks are classified into Gaehwa period textbooks, textbooks from Gyosuyomok period to second education course period, and textbooks from third education course period to seventh education course period by their description styles and contents. All of the above textbooks mention Dangun Joseon. However, Gaehwa period textbooks indicate that Dangun Joseon existed for 1,000 years and describe Gija Joseon in detail. Gija Joseon is mentioned in the textbooks from Gyosuyomok period to second education course period, while it is not included in the textbooks from third education course period to seventh education course period. In addition, existence of Dangun
Joseon is not described in detail. Most of the textbooks agree on including the history of Goguryeo and Balhae.
In connection with descriptions of Manchuria region, textbooks of Gyosuyomok period seemed more reasonable than textbooks after third education course period. Textbooks of Gyosuyomok period described Manchuria region and the tribes who lived at that area in detail, and that explains the sort of situation when they established a relationship with Korea. Future textbooks should follow the description manner of the above.
It has to be mentioned that logical conformity of description has to be enhanced for contents regarding Manchuria region in Korean history textbooks. It is not clear how the historical experience of Gojoseon is inherited to the history thereafter. It is necessary to formulate the relationship of Gojoseon history with Goguryeo history. Furthermore, it is necessary to describe precisely the connection between Goguryeo and Balhae as well as that between Balhae and Goryeo.
To be considered as a history of one nation and country, cultural identities and pedigree of social characteristics should be raised. It is hard to be regarded as an identical unit without the above aspect. For that reason, history of Samguk should not be described separately and rather should be described under a single title.
In addition, it is necessary for active and detailed description of China movement. Our country was influenced whenever a dynasty changed in China. We should avoid describing it as a coincidence.
