The purpose of this paper is 1) to analyze the relationship between structural change and commuting pattern change of Seoul Metropolitan Area, 2) to verify the existing theories concerned with urban system and travel behaviors by the results of the analysis, and 3) to provide the theoretical basis and directions for urban policies. The data employed is Population and Housing Census for 1990 and 1995. The geostatistical methods are employed. Job housing balance index and mean commuting distance are analyzed in accordance with industrial and job classification.
The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, Seoul Metropolitan Area are characterized by decentralized patterns of job and housing. Second, although job housing balance are slighty increased, mean commuting distances are not increased so much. Particularly, commuting distance within Seoul city are decreased. Concerned with industry and job, some difference are found in commuting distance. Finally, the result show that there are not strong relationship between job housing balance and commuting distance.
