This study is intended to trace the Romantic configuration of slavery, for understanding Romantic texts under the colonial processes contemporaneous with their imagined literary experience of colonized people. However, this study takes its bearings within the texts of Wordsworth and Blake. As the Romantic texts show the diverse concepts on slavery, more attention should be put on the comparison between the texts. For this purpose, this study is based on the assumption that Wordsworth's The Mad Mother and The Thorn, and Blake's The Little Black Boy are influenced by a fable, Inkle and Yarico, which was a well-known tale and became a touchstone for the literary works on slavery.
In The Mad Mother and The Thorn, Wordsworth overlooks the tragic condition of slavery, turning dilemmas of slavery into stories of domestic affairs. His texts reveal the Romantics' material interests, ideological limitations and blind spots. As opposed and contrasted to Wordsworth, Blake hints us a possibility to overcome those problems, suggesting the view point of the repressed. The comparison between Wordsworth and Blake thus reaches the conclusion that the Romantic configuration of slavery reflects the imperial ideology and has a possibility to get over it.
