This thesis is to study Shepard’s two major dramatic themes. The limitation of language in True West is so emphasized that two major characters have trouble communicating each other and with the world. To overcome its limits and conflicts Shepard tries ‘to reach new recognition’ and ‘to deconstruct the stereotypical value system’ by means of ‘myth’ and ‘violence’. Lee and Austin struggle between ‘real west’ and ‘true west’, which bring conflicts in True West. Myth in Shepard is expected to restore its original symbolic vitality and to explain the transcendental truth after the deconstruction of the commercialized myths through violence. This thesis is to focus on two kinds of deconstruction; One is the deconstruction of the West, the other is the deconstruction of characters. Therefore they could recognize not only the other side of their nature, the double nature but one is inherent in the other. In this way Shepard creates his own myth. The scene of fratricide, which is the denouement of the plot, symbolizes his own creation of myth.
