Modern women writers attempt to question and develop discussion over the nature and existence of women itself as well as the modern society, through the communication with other writers of the past. For this purpose, they choose the method of "intertextualitv".
What modern female writers would like to find through the intertextuality is to point out existing stereotype of a woman in the literature or literature flaws about the life of a women itself, and correct them. They attempt to reposition a woman as a real figure who has been seen as idealized and secondary. To achieve their goal, modern female writers choose the third person, the traditional Russian Literature, as their communication partner. L. Ulitskaia also attempts communication with A. Pushkin by parodying his works.
Ulitskaia never beautifies the life, rather examine the real life in detail. Also, the figures in her works are neither beautiful nor common. Critics view her works as close to naturalism and assume her creation method is related to her major, biology. Such characteristics of Ulitskaia's creation is well illustrated in her work The Queen of Spades which shares the same title of Pushkin's. In the work, The Queen of Spades, she attempts to challenge and distort the authority and reasoning of Pushkin by elaborating the lives of women in detail which is not quite beautiful or sophisticated. The method of Parody here is the tool to establish alternative authority of parodists against that of architext.
The writing style of Ulitskaia is that of fiction's imitation of reality. From this perspective, her writing style is self-reflexive in that it let us reflect and re-appreciate Pushkin's writing. It also explores the doubtful relationship between reality and fiction by showing Pushkin's tradition and exploring the artificial situations created by Pushkin. Text of Pushkin which is fantastic and romantic, but closed, is open to the world through the figures in the Pushkin's work who are combined in Anna, and through the real relationship between Anna and Mur, and intervention of readers to her tragic destiny. Inter-communications among Pushkin-Ulitskaia-readers enable the re-appreciation and re-consideration of the people, reality, and identity of not only contemporary Russia but the times of Pushkin.
