Cultural traditions is not formed within a short time, but formed for a long time by creating and preserving culture. Jindo has secured tradition as Yulhyang, that is, the hometown of melody and rhythm for a long time, and Jindo folk song is based on the tradition of Yulhyang, which are distinctive cultural characteristics from other regions.
Although it is true that Folksong is a kind of art containing locality, it is difficult to find out unique aesthetic characteristics distinct from other regions. Nevertheless, a distinctive element can be found when considering the entire Jindo Folksongs, whose aesthetic characteristic is ‘amusement’. In addition, the unique characteristic of Jindo people is extraordinary affection for songs. They love songs, so they voluntarily invite a teacher to learn songs and the teacher teaches songs for free of charge. Both the teacher and the learners do this because they are pleasant.
The characteristics of Jindo people who have overcome sorrow and hardship of life with amusement and songs accord with ‘Wiping away Tears with a Laugh’ proposed as the characteristic of the Korean culture by Kim Dae-haeng. ‘Wiping away Tears with a Laugh’ is meaningful in a sense that sadness is blocked and further transformed into a new situation through causing a laugh in a sad situation by intentional linguistic efforts.
Lastly, another characteristic of Jindo Folksong is that it is transmitted as a living reality culture in the lives of the local people, not as a remaining culture. This is because Jindo people recreated Jindo Folksong according to changes in reality.
In order for Jindo to function as the ethos of the region, it should be firmly secure the status as an owner of Folksong by enriching own life more valuably through Folksong like a traditional way, not being led by cultural properties or sticking to a power struggle focusing on cultural properties.
