The Record of the Western World(大唐西域記) by Xuanzang (玄?), a Buddhist monk of the T'ang dynasty and Hye Ch'o Diary: The Memoirs of the Pilgrimage to the Five Regions of India(往五天竺國傳) by Hye Ch'o (慧超), a Buddhist monk of Silla, the records of two monks' observations and experiences during pilgrimages to India. As these two text contain much valuable cultural information and historical material, they have been an important object of research for many scholars in the fields of history, Buddhism, and geography. In particular, the viewpoint of civilization interchange has been of key interest and numerous studies and research projects have already been written on this topic.
While this focus on these texts as historical and religious records has been a productive source of knowledge, these books can also be regarded as a literary works in their own right. Until now, there has not been a thorough investigation and analysis of these texts as literature. Moreover, comparative studies on the two text are also lacking. This paper intends to examine and compare the two texts from the viewpoint of literature. I will compare the two texts' literacy elements and significance, their routes of travel; their motives and purposes of travel; their respective writing styles; the two monks' personal concerns revealed during the travel; and their attitudes toward India. Through this careful examination, I hope to illuminate the differences and distinctions between the two examples of early travel literature, while also illustrating the two works' literary nature.
