Augustus had to face a strong opposition from the Senate after the Battle of Actium. The opposition was led by the upper class of the Senate. This made Augustus strengthen his control of the Senate.
The tactics of Augustus in dealing of the Senate can be described as follows. First, he tried to reconstitute the Senate by allowing the class of the knights to be members of the Senate. Secondly, he tried to influence the sessions of the Senate by using the various rights to meddle in the sessions. Lastly, Augustus restricted the political power of the senators by limiting the rights of the executive offices.
In conclusion, the strengthening of Augustus' control do the Senate enabled him to establish the Principate. Augustuss's policies made the senators dependent upon himself. and the senators had to adapt themselves to the August an system. In the course of these changes, the relationship between Augustus and the senators grew friendly. There were few resistance against Augustus's status, the Principate and it became hereditary. Therefore, it can be said that the hereditary office of the Principate were a result of the Augustan policy of the Senate.
