The purpose of this paper is to inquire the argument about 'national language' and 'rhetoric' of North Korean literature in the 1950s and the 1960s. Critics indicated that "Takmul-u'ui", an allegorical expression which figured an emotion as a thing, might be the most specific aspect of Korean language. 'Takmul-u'ui" was an important traditional element which was quite similar with "U'on"(an indirect expression) in South Korea. Such lively expressions of the national language which greatly utilized a proverb, a metaphor, and a figurative expression were highly valued as a tradition elevating 'Inminsong"
As above, analyses on "Chunhyang-jon", which was one of the best classical literary heritages in Korea, illustrated the main topic of the argument about the national specificity, which was the key point of the discourse on tradition of North Korea in literary field. The argument about the national specificity was materialized as "an argument about the national characteristic" while abstracting national specificity in personalities and characteristics of characters in contents of a literary text. In forms, 'the essence of national language,' 'the form of people's words,' and the peculiarity of 'description and rhetoric' were classified into various types.
