In the modern stringent upcoming diesel engine emission regulation, LTC(LTC; low temperature diesel combustion) is one of the combustion mode which can simultaneously lower nitric oxide(NOx) and particulate matter(PM) emission. Although many researches are studying the operating range of LTC , there are many problems for applying LTC to engine. This study presents mode transtion concept in a diesel engine. LTC mode was used at low speed and loads while conventional diesel combustion mode was used for high speed and loads. In this study, IMEP(indicated mean effective pressure) variation during combustion mode transition was investigated. The amount of injected fuel and EGR(exhaust gas recirculation) rate which is dominant factor in determining combustion mode were used as experimental parameters.
The results showed rapid variations of IMEP when combustion mode transition occured. That meant engine operation was not stable. So if that was applied to real car, many drivers would feel very uncomfortable. Therefore, strategies to make engine operation stabilized were introduced. First, gradient of changing EGR rate was varied to be lower. Second, amount of injected fuel was controlled to minimize IMEP variation. Through those strategies, variation of IMEP became smaller to 0.17 ㎫.
