The purpose of this study is to analyze desires found in Vegetarian which belongs to Han Kang"s novel series. Han Kang wrote short stories starting with "Vegetarian", followed by "Mongolian Spots" and "Wooden Flames", and finally ended with a full-length novel, Vegetarian. Despite each of the short stories is aesthetically complete, the novelist united the three works into a series. This is unusual. With characters of the above novels, Han Kang intended to represent that it"s never easy to fulfil desires.
It"s not easy to analyze desires found in Vegetarian. This is because characters of the novel have desires which are absolute. Desires of the main character, "Yeong Hye" and another, "he" are on the line from public and private ones. These desires are exceptional and not simply understood. "Yeong Hye" appears to be the main character of the above novel series. Her desire, "not eating meat any more" and his(her elder sister"s husband) "art" are like resistance that orients something beyond personal wishes. The main context of Vegetarian, that is, family romance allows complex interpretations between public rules and private desires.
Nevertheless, the orientation of Hang Kang"s novel series is clear. The novelist analyzes such desires as created, collided and excluded within the family from view points which are different among her three short stories. In these novels, desires created under the order of patriarchal suppression are clearly punished by means of the family order. In her novels, Han Kang strongly suggests that our desires and life can"t avoid being evaluated as long as they are never free of family, reality and ethical criticism.
