The hardly predictable dynamics of international tourism are apparently the reason for the scarcity of studies on future tourist flows and destination switching patterns. Since international tourists switch their destinations over time, analyzing the switching patterns by the tourist may be of help in developing marketing strategies. This study explores this issue by attempting to develop a Markov Chain Model that can forecast future international tourist flows and switching patterns. By using the model, this study identifies tourists" destination switching patterns and potential equilibrium market shares of the four major countries that generate and attract international tourists. The countries included in the study are China, USA, Japan, and Korea.
