This study examines onomatopoeia notations based on the first translation and retranslation of Futabatei Shimei"s translation work, ?『Aibiki(Secret love affair)』?. Upon investigation, kana orthography is dominant in the first translation, but kanji orthography is increased in the retranslation. It can be seen that this trend in both copies results from the style of magazines. The style of ?『Kokuminnnotomo(The Nations Friend)』?, including in the first translation, is generally rhetorical and uses kanji abundantly, but the usage of furigana is limited.
On the other hand, the kanji of onomatopoeia notations can be actively introduced in the retranslation of his single book ?『Katakoi(Crush)』?, because of the free writing style and notations and the abundant use of furigana, unlike in the previous translation. Next, it is noted that the creation, deletion, replacement, and change of onomatopoeia are divided by contrasting sentences of the same scene between the first translation and retranslation.
As a result, most translations using onomatopoeia are of scenes of a descriptive nature and characters" psychology in the retranslation. Also, there are many descriptions of the conditions of objects and of human behavior where previously used onomatopoeia has been deleted in the retranslation.
In order to translate Russian originals closely, onomatopoeia in the first translation is replaced by different onomatopoeia in the retranslation. For example, similar onomatopoeia is used in both translations of Turgenev"s original script.
Differences in form between the onomatopoeia of both translations are divided according to external and internal factors: the former is influenced by the style of magazines and the latter is a result of the change in the translation process, that is, from literal translation to liberal translation.
Unlike in the first translation, kanji onomatopoeia such as 『?然』『吃驚』『煌?』can be used efficiently for describing a character"s feelings and natural phenomena, with help of furigana as a suggestion in the retranslation script.
