In the interior of the “Shi-Bu-Shi” question there exist different interrogative degree, which are not directly linked to the nature of the syntax ingredient behind, but largely determined by communicative intention and knowledge condition. Communicative intention is the direct cause to affect the interrogative degree, while knowledge condition is the indirect cause. This thesis explores the interrogative degree of the “Shi-Bu-Shi” question with the speaker’s communicative intention as the direct standard. Based on the presence or absence of the listener, this thesis divides the “Shi-Bu-Shi” question into two types?the “self-asking” question and the “others-asking” question. The interrogative degree of the self-asking “Shi-Bu-Shi” question is universally weak. On the contrary, the others-asking “Shi-Bu-Shi” question possesses distinctive differences in interrogative degree.
