The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of art activity-centered cooperative outdoor play based on a theme of young children’s social interaction and creativity. The study was conducted with a total of 50 5-year-old children in each class (25) of two kindergartens in the city of J, Jeollabukdo, Korea. The children were randomly divided into an experimental group (25) and a control group (25). Experimental treatment of theme-based, art activity-centered cooperative outdoor play was conducted for the experimental group for 12 weeks from April 28, 2014 to July 18, 2014. Theme based, art activity-centered cooperative outdoor play was composed of ‘play activities, art activities, and music activities for 2-week basic units. In other words, they began with a play plan of play activities on Tuesday on the first week, and finished with evaluation on Friday of the second week. Between play plan and evaluation art activities and music activities were conducted. The results of the study are as follows. First, theme-based, art activity-centered cooperative outdoor play generally improved young children’s social interaction such as positive verbal interactions, initiative actions on peers, pro-social behavior and positive responses to peers’ suggestions. Second, theme-based, art activity-centered cooperative outdoor play generally improved young children’s creativity such as fluency, flexibility, originality, and imagination.
