In domestic cases, specific issues have been reported to be a problematic issue in children’s hospital such as lack of physical environment, insufficient amount of space, and lack of healing environment to reduce children’s psychological stress. Hence, it is demanded that medical facilities that specializes on children have appropriate healing environment that takes children’s emotional and physical properties into account.
The objective of this research is to analyze patient resting areas in children’s wards in terms of healing environment and to propose improvements. In this research we examined 6 children’s hospital cases in national university hospitals that have 100 beds capacity or more.
Through analysis of preceding research, characteristics of healing environment could be classified into six different categories: pleasantness, safety, aesthetic, eco-friendliness, privacy, and sociality. Each ward’s resting area was evaluated based on these characteristics.
For various activities and exchange of information between child patients and their guardians, television, computer, and kid’s library are placed together. Movable furniture is placed in a circular shape, facing each other, encouraging sociality. However, given the state of accessibility to outdoor garden or the way plants were organized, eco-friendliness is rather passive. Lack of buffers, such as walls, partitions, or pillars also means lack of privacy for patients’ guardians. Therefore, in order to provide emotional stability and comfort to children and their guardians, the resting area needs natural elements such as plants, indoor garden, fountain or pond. Furthermore, the space could be used more efficiently if the area is divided into separate zones, using different colors, furniture, and finishing materials.
