The location of Geum-Seong castle has not been clear for the ambiguous and contradictory records. Perhaps the ambiguity comes from the fact that ‘Geum-Seong’ was the name of not only royal castle of Silla but also Gyeongju town castle of the Goryeo dynasty.
Geum-Seong was buiit on a lowland and wide flatland according to the records of Samguk-Sagi, so it might be located on the field at the south of Wol-Seong(月城) castle. It lies to the east of Gyerim forest and about 1.8 kilometers eastward far from the Gyeongju town castle of the Joseon dynasty, so it corresponds to the historical records. King Talhae (脫解王) was buried on the Socheon(疏川) hill lying to the north of the castle. The phonetic value of 疏and 沙was same as *sra in Eastern Han period. So Socheon hill means Wol-Seong hill near Sacheon(沙川) called Namcheon nowadays. The presumed location of Geum-Seong castle was surrounded by the earthen walls, early royal tombs and other early historic sites of Silla. It increases the reliability of this hypothesis.
