This study focuses on Korean Language Textbooks which are written in Japanese in the usage of educating Japanese learners. It is written from the viewpoint of ‘Phonological Phenomena description’ in the modern Korea. This study shows the history of transition of the phonological phenomena over the period from 1880 and 1945.
The early Korean Language Textbooks show very simple form of grammar description of modern Korean language. However, they adapted more sophisticated and diverse grammar description, including phonological phenomena, for Korean language.
To fulfill the need of people who need to learn grammar for Korean language, 호세코 시케카츠 wrote 한어입문 and it’s the first book that described the grammatical phenomenon apart from the past language textbooks.
To be specific, the majority of Korean Language Textbooks displayed extremely simple grammar description. In this sense, there were no description of the rules for Korean grammar; there were only simple and basic form of sentences which are useful for trading with Korean. After wars, there were increasing demand for the accurate use of Korean as there were more Japanese immigrating into Korea and more situation arose where they had to use daily life.
In conclusion, the books showed how the phonological phenomena has changed; in more sophisticated and diverse form.
