This study begins with the arguments derived from the origin of the Buddha image. The origin of the image of Buddha and Buddhist literature have been connected to each other for propaganda purposes. This thesis refers to the origin of the Buddha image and Buddhist literature. The Udena Buddha legend finds itself at a historical inflection point, when the character of the Buddha image and Buddhist literature were changing. As mentioned in this thesis, the Buddha was absent, and people needed to be reminded of his inspiration, which is how an image of the Buddha and associated literature were made. What are the roles and implications of the Udena Buddha?
I have done a comparative analysis to illustrate my theory of the Udena Buddha legend. The idea of the origin of the Buddha image is by no means new. This worship of the Buddha image had nothing to do with original Buddhism, especially in that it did not originate with the monks, but with the lay community. Furthermore, people often give very different accounts of the same event. The Udena Buddha legend is well-known in early Buddhist literature. It exhibits all the characteristics of being a hold-over from a very early account of the making of an image of the Buddha and a different design story. We must realize that the propaganda created by changing the Udena story could have had a ripple effect on Mahayanist as well as early Buddhists.
