Causa Lutheri (the case of Martin Luther), provoked by Luther’s attack on indulgences on October 31, 1517, became a significant issue in the political agenda of the Germanspeaking territories of the Holy Roman Empire. Therefore, the Causa Lutheri was discussed as an important political agenda at the Diet of Worms, which was opened by the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, on January 27, 1521. Charles V told a group of electors that he was ready to proceed against Luther, condemning him as a notorious heretic. Most electors were in agreement with the emperor. Luther was asked to explain his views and Charles ordered him to recant his early position. Though knowing that he could possibly be executed, Luther refused to recant his theological opinion.
With the decree of May 8th, 1521, known as the Edict of Worms, the emperor placed an imperial ban on Luther, forbidding the distribution of Luther’s theological writings. However, the Edict of Worms could not be enforced; rather, the reformatory ideas developed further. Therefore, it follows that Charles V failed to achieve his dream of universal monarchy as the ultimate goal of his rule. He also failed to stop the Reformation and could not prevent the spread of the Protestant Reformation from sweeping his Empire, because he was preoccupied by battles with France and the Ottoman Turks. Eventually, the Protestant Reformation contributed to the collapse of Holy Roman Empire, because it led to the armed anti-Habsburg revolts in the shape of religious wars between Protestants and Catholics.
