This study is about the possibility of presenting the acting theory of animation. For this purpose, I will examine the character acting theory of Walt Disney which is the representative of acting theory of animated characters, and try to find out whether there are limitations and improvement points. In childhood, Walt Disney was influenced by Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton influenced by comedies Del Arte. Walt chose realism for commercial success tool and he introduced realistic characters to his first full length animated feature, Snow White and Seven Dwarfsanimation in 1937. The introduction of realistic characters naturally leads to the concept of acting. From this moment, Animation required acting, not just moving. Without systematic training or theoretical basis for acting, he referred to the acting of Hollywood actors for realistic animation acting. However Walt Disney eventually failed to present his own theory of acting in animation. Instead, Disney organizes twelve principles of animation. Disney’s twelve principles are useful in motion theory, but these principles can be reinterpreted as the theory of specific character psychological expressions, which is the core of acting theory. Unlike a play, a movie can delicately express the psychology of an actor through shots. An animation also needs a theory of acting for the expression of a psychology of a character as well as a live action acting theory. In the movie or on the stage, the actor’s acting is visualized through the body of the actor, but in the animation there is no body of the actor.
But in the animation, the body of the actor can be replaced by the motion of the image. Psychological analysis for character has the same process for both actor and animator. Therefore, If you replace the theories of the actors’ gesture with the theories of motion, you can present an acting theory of for animation.
To this end, I will reinterpret Disney’s twelve principles based on Mikhail Chekhov’s psychological gesture theory which is appropriate for the actor’s psychological expression, and suggest the possibility of a new animation acting theory based on Mikhail Chekhov’s acting theory.
