2D animation is divided into Full-Animation and Limited Animation according to its production methods. Due to the nuance of its nomenclature and its many works focusing on economical benefits, Limited Animation can be easily perceived as animation that is somewhat lacking and limited. However, such perception are misleading. Limited Animation strives to entertain with independent methods and styles that are distinctive from Full-Animation. In addition, Limited Animation has established its own unique and experimental style of surrealism, which distinguishes it from Full-Animation based on realism. Also, with the integration of modern computer technology and the high-tech environment of the Internet and smart phones, Limited Animation has gained great freedom in terms of production methods and can be utilized in various creative ways. Limited Animation can attribute its distinguishing method and style, and such aesthetic values to the pioneering efforts of UPA (United Production of America) the representative American animation studio of the 1940s. Established in the early 1940s, UPA creatively utilized the low-budget Limited Animation production methods to create and develop is innovative 2D animation style while incorporating aesthetic values. Most animation studios including Disney at that time concentrated on realistic animation productions. The many creative experiments of UPA still have a vast influence on various 2D animation works of the present. This paper aims to analyze the aesthetical aspects of Limited Animation that distinguish it from Full-Animation and predict the possibilities for its future development by examining the representative works of UPA and its experimental and creative implementations.
