Much research has shown that telecollaboration helps language learners not only improve their linguistic skills but also further their intercultural competence. This research, though, primarily focuses on the English and European languages. Given a paucity of Internet-mediated communication (IMC) studies on less commonly taught languages, this paper explores and describes the interactions between Korean language learners and English language learners in information and communications technology (ICT)-based collaborative videoconferencing, which was aimed at improving interdisciplinarity and linguistic skills. Specifically, it reports on the ten-week synchronous interactions of one-to-one desktop videoconferencing having a series of sessions arranged between 15 intermediate-level Korean learners at a US university and their counterparts in South Korea. The results show that the one-on-one ICT-based videoconferencing enhances Korean-English language learners’ interdisciplinary learning and linguistic skills in terms of increased recognition of bias, improvement of cognitive abilities and critical thinking skills, as well as deepening the understanding of lexical items and sentence-level expressions.
