Purpose: This study aims to compare characteristics of understanding of spoken texts between cochlear implanted children and hearing impaired children in schooling age and use the result for intervention and teaching method in the auditory rehabilitation of cochlear implanted children. Methods: Total 20 elementary school students including 10 cochlear implanted children and 10 hearing impaired children participate in the investigation for this study. The participated children are controled to have the identical chronological age, language age and hearing acuity in advance. For the investigation procedure, 4 spoken texts are provided for the children. And each child is guided to select a text and silently read the selected text. Then the child is asked to write answers for the questions (realistic questions and abstract questions) following each question type based on the understanding from reading. For variable control, the same sequence, place and resting time are applied to the children. Results: The investigation result reveals followings: First, in case of understanding on the realistic questions based on the spoken texts, the cochlear implanted children show less scores than that of the earing impaired children, yet no significant difference in the statistics is identified. Second, for understanding on abstract questions based on the spoken texts, the cochlear implanted children show less scores than that of the earing impaired children, yet no significant difference in the statistics is identified. Third, for understanding on the types of the questions based on the spoken texts, the cochlear implanted children show less scores than that of the earing impaired children, yet no significant difference in the statistics is identified. Conclusions: As the conclusion, both of the cochlear implanted children and hearing impaired children show low scores on understanding for the spoken texts, yet, with no significant difference. The cause of such result is determined to be that the implantations have conducted for the cochlear implanted children in their young ages followed by continuous auditory trainings and language therapies. Therefore, the cochlear implanted children show to have the understudying on the spoken texts in the same level with the hearing impaired children.
