This article focused on promoting liberal arts education and communication competences. I consider happiness important but our society has emphasized personal happiness over social happiness. The process of discussing social happiness leads to reflection on structural problems of our society. I examine what types of education are necessary to attain happiness for all members of society and intensively consider liberal arts education and communication education among them. First, I briefly review the German Gymnasium curriculum as an alternative to our secondary school education, which consumes most time in helping students prepare for their college entrance examination. The Gymnasium Advanced Course provides implications for our secondary education and the liberal arts education of our universities.
The present state of communication education in Korea is divided into reading education, expression education, and discussion education. Reading is not only a way of building insights but is also a means to establish identity, so that a university"s communication education should enable students to experience these valuable avenues for personal growth. The discussion of expression education is accompanied by the claim that the educational pattern of our society should be changed. I have to communicate with various audiences and readers to understand their thoughts, to draw empathy from them and persuade them, and this process is examined through a look at rhetoric education. Since rhetoric is a discipline that harmonizes thought, speech and behavior, it has been proven that the principles of rhetoric can be the basis of expression education. Finally, in the process of debate education, rhetoric has proven to be useful. In this paper, I present a rhetorical discussion model that emphasizes the process of understanding and persuading opponents to change their positions and exposing unsuccessful debate tactics to reveal an opponent"s logical contradictions.
