Crucifixes, statuary, relics and other human-made depictions of spiritual and biblical themes were commonly seen in the streets, churches, and homes of the Christian world including the East and the West before the Reformers of the sixteenth century. Because of the superstitious abuses and cultic worships associated with them, such images became natural targets for those who desired to reform the church. In this light the article has sought to understand theological and ecclesiastical teaching on icons, namely, images as outlined in the works of St. John of Damascus in the 8th century and Martin Luther in the 16th centaury. They both fought with iconoclasts and responded their accusation of images as idols by stressing that images were traditionally regarded as a means to remind of Jesus, teach the church’s doctrines and improve Christians’ piety. John’s argument is bound tightly to the preceding patristic tradition and the teaching of the Ecumenical Councils regarding the Incarnation of Christ which shows the perfect union between his two natures. Luther approached the task of destroying images by first tearing them out of the heart through God’s Word. In other words, Luther took note of the abusive use of images.
Thus, this paper will delve into their perspectives on the issue of images in relation to the understanding of the Incarnation. In fact the person of Christ plays a crucial role in responding to the theological challenges posed by the iconoclasts. For this, it will deal with how and why icons are regarded as symbols which refect the divine prototype archtype. And then it will observe that John of Damascus places the person of Christ at the core of his iconology and puts the Christological dimension at the center of the dispute. For the part of Luther, it will argue that Luther rejects the law of the prohibition of images as the ceremonial law which had no validity in the context of Christianity. And then Luther’s understanding of the relationship between the spiritual and the material worship will be examined and conclude that for him the spiritual life could never be totally disembodied from the material life.
