This study focuses on how the anger metaphor can be conceptualized with respect to inanimacy, departing from traditional studies on the anger metaphor that were conducted mostly in relation to persons or animate beings. Especially, this study accounts for how and why the anger metaphor used with inanimacy can produce constructive meanings, overriding its usually associated negative connotations. In doing so, this study compares the Korean adjective hwanan ‘angry’ with the English adjective angry, pinpointing the similarities and differences between them. What is common about them is that their meanings can be explained by elaboration processes working on already existing metaphorical entailments. Yet, they are different in the way their constructiveness is derived.
