The essential part of the word “spirituality” is “spirit.” “Spirit” is a translation of the Greek term, “pneuma” or of the Hebrew term, “ruach.” Both “pneuma” and “ruach” mean “wind” or “breath.” Now the act of breathing consists of two movements, inhalation and exhalation. My activity of inhalation occurs in response to exhalations by others. My activity of exhalation again leads to inhalations by others. The two-way activity of respiration is a symbol of our life as communion, as inter-being that happens always in the world. Life is fundamentally spiritual insofar as spirituality is understood as communion, as sharing of breath. We had better distinguish between spirituality as an ontological fact and spirituality as an existential task. Spirituality as an ontological fact refers to the metaphysical truth that all forms of life without exception exist only in perichoretic communion with one another. Spirituality as an existential task points to our responsibility of relationship that we as beings of high intelligence and wide range of free will have for our fellow creatures. We human beings are called to lead our life in responsible love for our fellow creatures. I mean by life of responsible love for our fellow creatures a life that contributes to the increase of their happiness as well as to the decrease of their sufferings. The neighbors with whom we are called to have an authentic spiritual life, i.e., the life of communion and compassion comprise not only of fellows human beings but also of all creatures in the world such as plants and animals. All creatures without exception are beings of theological worth and value in that they are created from God of exhalation and redeemed back into God of inhalation. The spirituality called for today is a spirituality that is ecologically sensitive.
