One of the most significant development in Christian spirituality is the Biblical foundation of spirituality. Christian spirituality refers to both biblical persons and experiences. The purpose of this thesis is to describe various contents in studying biblical spirituality, different approaches to understanding biblical experience as such. I am convinced that there is hardly a human emotion, hardly an aspect of the modern quest for God, that does not have a precedent, a counterpart somewhere within the biblical story.
The intention is here to draw attention to the fact that understanding biblical spirituality is a vital part of any serious approach to living the Christian spiritual life. Our focus is on what those who actually study spirituality are saying about the subject of their study. The people who produced these texts, we must remember, were real people. They struggled to understand their world and the divine presence within it. They had no blueprints, no recipes, no secret formulas, no easy answers for the ultimate questions of life. But their wisdom, their hopes and dreams, and their faith convictions constitute our heritage and the sacred, yes normative, text for our lives.
In studying biblical spirituality today, a great deal of attention has been given to answering two interrelated questions: What is studied in studying biblical spirituality? How is it to be studied? Struggling with these questions has resulted in the emergence of very different views of just what the stuff of spirituality is, and how one might best approach it. And as the what and how of studying biblical spirituality becomes clearer, it is increasingly recognized as a distinct branch of study in both educational and biblical theology. For Christians believers, and those open to the search for God, the Bible is our sacred text, a source of inspiration, a pathway to God, a vade mecum for life's journey - waiting to be discovered.
What does biblical spirituality study? The relationship between spiritual education and biblical theology are stressed. The fruits of interrelated dialogues are brought to bear on the subject where appropriate. The real referent of the metaphor "word of God" is the entire mystery of divine revelation, God's received self-gift to us in and through such symbols as creation, sacred history, Jesus himself, and the life of the believing community. This God is the One who blesses and calls us to the fullness of life here and now.
Biblical spirituality is concerned with the work of the Holy Spirit in tensive interaction with the human spirit. How is spirituality studied? An authentic understanding of the spiritual life can be of benefit in our faltering efforts to be conformed to the person of Christ through life in the Spirit. Bible is a repository that preserves the sacred memories and religious imagination of our Israelite and early Christian ancestors. It is a reservoir of "living water" that mediates to us the divine presence. It is no wonder that we should turn to this living word as the privileged foundation of our life of faith, our spirituality for today. The language and concepts of biblical texts are finite and incapable of containing or capturing fully the infinite revelation of God.
Christians have idea of the profound spiritual resources for their lives and ministry waiting to be discovered in the Bible. The four gospels are texts that sear the soul. The gospels invites us to stand with the apostles. The gospels ask us to experiences delight in leading the great liturgy of freedom. The gospels compel us to shake our fists at God with the oppressed at our side. The gospels challenge us to see Peter's repentance. The gospels beckons us to know Jesus, the Messiah, the Human One. The gospels draw us to consider the faith of apostles. and of the deacon Phoebe, the life of James the brother of the Lord.
