This study aims to thoroughly explore the identity formation experiences of students from multicultural families and to understand their significance in the context of school education. For this study, the author studied the cases of six students from multicultural backgrounds who had attended school in Korea. The results showed that young people, through various experiences, not only contemplated their identity but also pondered which nationality they belonged to. At the same time, at school they had to face the prejudices that Korean society holds toward people with foreign backgrounds. The students were often classified as a “multicultural student” or had to cope with prejudices toward their families. All of these developed into an identity crisis when they met the convoluted expectations of the society. However, another result was that the students had developed strategies of their own to avoid psychological distress, such as distancing themselves from the multicultural community or ignoring these issues altogether while focusing on the work at hand. Even though these individual efforts were not sufficient for them to entirely avoid problems stemming from their cultural backgrounds, it is noteworthy that they somehow managed to overcome problems and formed identities in their own ways.
