Low birth rate and an aging population is a serious problem in today’s society. There is a strong need for population education especially in face of a rapidly aging society. Population education not only emphasizes the issue of encouraging childbirth and explaining the problems of an aging society but also the various social implications of these problems and the values needed in order to overcome these issues. This study examines a case study of mural painting facilitating a multicultural understanding from a population education perspective, which was implemented in 2015 through a program that combines art and population education in Y highschool – a population education leading school. In the process of mural production after the population education which dealt with issues of respect for life, gender equality, marriage values, diverse families, equality among different generations, students exchanged in-depth discussions regarding multiculturalism. In addition, students strived to produce murals that could be easily identified by people of diverse cultures and received without bias. They were also able to communicate with numerous people through their mural work and showed an understanding of multicultural families, displaying tolerance and respect towards diversity.
