This study proposes that the Korean sentence pre-final suffix -keyss is a modal expressing deontic and epistemic meanings since it does not indicate “source of information” as a primary meaning, although it could be considered as evidential at first blush, just like the English modal must, which can express inferential meaning. To elaborate this argument, this study first examines the definition of two distinct categories of modality (e.g., deontic and epistemic) and evidentiality. Then -keyss is analyzed, focusing on its frequency and distribution of the recurrent patterns of keyss construction with authentic discourse data to propose -keyss is a Korean modal.
