In Cheon un-yeong’s Short stories, there are often characters who assault someone without losing their reason. And on the other side of them, there are characters who are ruthlessly attacked and endured. They do not resist or cry, they just crouch and endure with the punching and kicking. They are ‘people who endure violence’ and form an important axis in the character composition of Cheon’s Short stories. This paper is a study of these ‘people who endure violence’. They are those whose endurance and endurance have become an important part of the personality.
This paper shows how “endurance of violence” appears in Cheon’s Short stories and how it relates to wildness, the main aesthetic of Cheon’s Short stories. It also reveals that “endurance of violence” is one of the most important topics in human understanding and life understanding of Cheon’s Short stories.
Some conclusions drawn by this paper are as follows. 1) In Cheon’s Short stories, almost everyone including the attacker endures something. Objects of endurance are a kind of ‘violence’ from reality and destiny. 2) The image of the wild, a prominent attraction of Cheon’s Short stories, is often related to the power of enduring this violence. In particular, appetite and aggression are usually the means to endure pain in reality. 3) Cheon’s Short stories show that enduring suffering is a universal condition for all people, and all of them are ultimately compassionate. But there is a qualitative difference in the way of enduring suffering, and the difference is not simply negligible. 4) There are people in Cheon’s Short stories who endure pain only by the power of pure endurance, not by the means of eating and hitting. They do not cry or scream in spite of the harsh beatings of reality and destiny, and they keep themselves undisturbed. This reveals the belief that ‘bearing’ can be a way of keeping our own original images pure for the inevitable sufferings that are always present in life.
