Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate play environment and examine quality level of outdoor playgrounds according to installed location. Methods: There were collected a total of 306 outdoor playgrounds located in Seoul, comprised of 80 public parks, 70 child centers, 73 elementary schools and 83 apartment complexes. The present conditions of play environments, such as space area, surface pavement materials and facilities for play(fixed play equipment, sandpit, artificial hill) were observed and the quality level of outdoor playgrounds was assessed. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlations and independent t-test. Results: First, the play environment of outdoor playgrounds had different aspects according to the type of installed location. Second, The results showed that the quality score of public park outdoor playgrounds was the best and the score of child center outdoor playgrounds was the worst. Third, there was a correlation between the play environments, such as space area, surface pavement materials, facilities for play, and the quality score of outdoor playgrounds. Conclusions: This study can be used as a basic data for establishing a policy strategy to improve the quality level of outdoor playgrounds according to each type of installed location.
